CARNIVAL SELECTION CRITERIA (SWIMMING, CROSS COUNTRY AND ATHLETICS)
Students must, in all circumstances, be in attendance and compete at a zone carnival in their school team in order to be considered for selection in the zone team to compete at the Sydney East Carnival, unless they are competing at a higher-level school sport PSSA/SSA (School Sport Australia) competition.
-
In all cases, a written request for consideration for inclusion in the zone team must be presented to the convener.
-
This request must be presented to the zone convener at least two school days prior to the zone carnival.
-
This request is to be verified/endorsed by the student’s principal or school sports organiser, listing the student’s school performance and any relevant previous zone/Sydney East PSSA performances in that sport. This will then be considered for selection by a panel made up of the zone executive and convener.
-
Inclusion in the zone team under these circumstances will not be at the expense of individuals who have competed at, and qualified for, the zone team based on the qualification procedures determined by the Sydney East PSSA, and is also subject to approval from the relevant Sydney East PSSA convener.
-
The zone convener and the Inner West Zone PSSA executive will make the final decision on any inclusion in a zone team.
-
Submitting a request for consideration for inclusion does not guarantee inclusion in the zone team.
-
The zone convener is to organise all aspects of running the zone carnival, e.g. venue, uniform and format.
TEAM SELECTION CRITERIA
The zone pathway is intended for students who demonstrate gifted and talented athletic ability. Zone trials are not intended as “come and try” events. Each school may send to the trial only the maximum number of students specified by the zone convener.
In exceptional circumstances, dispensation may be given by the zone convener in consultation with the executive to allow additional students to trial. Schools are not obliged to send the maximum number of students to trial. A nil return must be submitted to the convener if a school is not sending students to a trial.
If a student is not available for the Sydney East PSSA trial and/or NSW State Carnival, then the student is deemed ineligible to be selected in the zone team.
All students trialling for an Inner West PSSA zone team need to have the school’s permission to attend. The school principal or sports organiser must sign the student’s zone consent/permission form prior to the zone trial to allow attendance and participation in the zone trial. The signed permission note should be returned to the zone convener prior to the trial. Students who do not have a zone consent form signed by the school principal or sports organiser and presented prior to the event will not be permitted to trial.
Students must, in all circumstances, be in attendance and compete at the zone trial in order to be considered for selection in the zone team to compete at the Sydney East PSSA trial, unless:
-
They are competing at a higher-level school sport PSSA/SSA (School Sport Australia) competition.
-
They are participating in an approved school-based activity.
-
They are suffering an injury.
-
Students who are suffering an injury must also attend the trial in order for their inclusion in a zone team to be considered. In this case, an original doctor’s certificate must be presented to the zone convener, clearly stating the injury in the documentation. NB: General illness or medical conditions will not be considered acceptable grounds for non-attendance.
-
In all cases, a written request for consideration for inclusion in the zone team must be presented to the convener.
-
This request must be presented to the zone convener at least two school days prior to the zone trial.
-
This request is to be verified/endorsed by the student’s principal or school sports organiser, listing the student’s school performance and any relevant previous zone/Sydney East PSSA performances in that sport.
-
The zone convener and the Inner West Zone PSSA executive will make the final decision on any inclusion in the zone team.
-
Submitting a request for consideration for inclusion does not guarantee inclusion in the zone team.
-
If a train-on squad or second trial is called by the convener, students included due to injury (with doctor’s clearance) or representation at a school-based activity or higher-level school sport activity must be available and fit to play.
-
The zone convener will choose the team based on performance and zone selection criteria from the first and second trial (if required).
-
The zone convener is to organise all aspects of running the zone trial, e.g. venue, uniform, format, train-on squad or second trial.
-
The selection panel of personnel choosing the zone team will be determined by the Inner West Zone PSSA convener and/or executive if deemed necessary.
-
The zone convener is responsible for selecting the zone team and subsequently informing the zone executive and all member schools of selected students to compete at the Sydney East PSSA trials.
-
The zone convener, on behalf of the executive, will also inform the student and the student’s school in writing if consideration for inclusion is granted.
-
With regard to injury and following selection, a doctor’s clearance must be obtained stating that the injury has healed and the student is fit to participate. It must be presented at least two school days prior to the Sydney East PSSA trial for the student to join the Inner West PSSA team.
-
The zone convener, via the school’s sports organiser, must sight the doctor’s clearance either in person, by fax or by email. If no doctor’s clearance is provided to the convener, the student will be ineligible to join the Inner West Zone PSSA sports team.
